Before you buy that domain

Unread post by Sheryl Loch » Tue Aug 25, 2015 11:16 pm

Many of us have been to domain auction sites and found domains that we could use and they may even seem to be a good price…but you could be investing in a money pit.

In this article 17 percent of domains you will read that many of those domains have link spam issues, before you even get started, you may be sunk. Or it could cost you an arm and a leg to get the site out of the garbage can.

I saw in tweets from Aaron Wall that he believes the percentage of domains with link spam problems could be far higher. Tweet 1 and Tweet 2.

So before you just hop in and think you have found the perfect domain name on an auction site, you need to check it out or have someone who understands what to look for check it out.

I watch YouTube videos.

One simple thing is to run the domain through Google before buying, especially if you use the operator link:example.com if you search for the wildcard operator so that any word will match, and the link operator, you should find at least a sample of indexed pages that include any word, and a link to the domain.

https://www.google.com/search?q=*+%2Blink:example.com

However, while that can give you an idea if the site has links already (has been used in the past), and some idea of the kind of quality and context of some of the links, it obviously would not include the very worst, since we're most worried about links from pages that themselves are banned or penalized in Google.

For those, you need to turn to one of the SEO tools that run their own index of links such as https://majestic.com/, http://www.semrush.com/, or https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/
